Mountaineer basketball has a tradition of greatness. Whether it’s old greats like Jerry West, “Hot Rod” Hundley and Rod Thorn, or new legends like Kevin Pitsnogle, Mike Gansey, Joe Alexander, Da’Sean Butler and others, men’s basketball has distinguished itself among the best in the Big East and nation. Now, coach Bob Huggins has ushered in a new era of accomplishment and recognition. On the women’s side past greats Georgeanne Wells, Olivia Bradley, and Rosemary Kosiorek have joined modern era stars Kate Bulger, Yolanda Paige, Olayinka Sanni, Meg Bulger and others in elevating women’s basketball to new heights under the direction of coach Mike Carey.
In order to compete for BIG 12 and national prominence, the Basketball Legacy Fund was created to support the WVU men’s and women's basketball programs. The Fund was created to offset two ever-increasing costs associated with top flight basketball programs—recruiting and team travel. All funds in support of Basketball Legacy go directly towards ensuring that coach Huggins, coach Carey and their respective staffs have the necessary resources to recruit blue-chip student-athletes to WVU. Funds also support chartered air travel for each team throughout the season, keeping student-athletes in the classroom and allowing them to miss the least amount of class time.
Beginning in 2009, the Mountaineer Athletic Club introduced a new membership level for the Basketball Legacy Fund. The Legacy 1,000 Club allows members to contribute an annual gift of $1,000 and receive valuable benefits. Donors may choose lifetime membership in the Legacy 1,000 Club at a cost of $12,000. All funds are received and processed through the Mountaineer Athletic Club to help offset the escalating costs specifically associated with airplane travel for recruiting and competition.
All Legacy 1,000 Club members receive an annual recognition gift, quarterly newsletter, and interaction opportunities with Coach Bob Huggins and Coach Mike Carey and their Mountaineer basketball staffs. Members of the Legacy Fund can take pride in their involvement, knowing it has a true impact on the quest for BIG 12 titles, tournament championships, national prominence and winning within the rules.
