Mountaineer Athletic Club: West Virginia University's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics
The Mountaineer Athletic Club's primary goal in supporting the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is to ensure that each student-athlete has the opportunity to be a student first, and in doing so ensure that each student-athlete obtains the education necessary to prepare them for the future. As a supporter of the Mountaineer Athletic Club, you have the chance to make a lasting impact on these young people by providing the financial resources necessary to build champions on and off the playing fields. In an effort to permanently fund athletic scholarships in each sport, the Mountaineer Athletic Club has established the Athletic Endowment Fund (AEF).

The purpose of this program is to provide a perpetual source of financial support for athletic scholarships through an established endowment fund. The interest generated from this endowment fund will be used to offset the scholarship costs for current student-athletes. As the cost of scholarships continues to climb, the growth of the AEF becomes vital to the future of WVU Intercollegiate Athletics. WVU Intercollegiate Athletics awards scholarships to approximately 350 student-athletes. Currently, a full scholarship at WVU costs approximately $16,000 for a West Virginia resident and $26,000 for a non-resident.

These scholarships, which cover tuition, fees, room, board and books, cost the Mountaineer Athletic Club more than $8 million annually. Currently, the interest generated from more than 200 endowed scholarships offset a portion of that tuition bill, but much more is needed. By participating in the Athletic Endowment Fund, donors create an endowment in their name that fully or partially funds a scholarship for one student-athlete on a Mountaineer team each year. The cost of all endowed scholarships can be spread over a five-year period, with payments made every year. Monies generated by the AEF are invested, and annual scholarships are awarded from the interest accrued from the fund (the current payout rate is 4%). The remaining portion, or principal, is reinvested, enabling the scholarship to grow to offset inflation and rising tuition costs. During the years in which a pledge is being paid, the donor will receive a variety of AEF benefits, the greatest of which is being assigned a WVU student-athlete each year and having the opportunity to see that athlete in action. Your generous gift of an endowed scholarship to the AEF will establish your legacy for generations of student-athletes to come at WVU.
